A common practice for RV owners is to insure their RV under their current auto policy. But too often the owner does not take the time to read what and how much is covered under their auto policy. In many instances, RV's covered under auto policies are not adequately covered.

One misconception RV owners have is that the personal property in their RV will be covered under their homeowners policy. This is true, but, coverage on personal property is limited when the property is kept somewhere other than the residence premises. Often the limit in a standard policy is very low and the usual policy deduction would apply.

To insure proper and adequate coverage, an RV owner should add a separate RV coverage to their current auto policy or secure a policy specifically for RV's.

Tips

Before your trip

  • Install a deadbolt lock on your RV
  • Inspect all belts and hoses for cracking especially radiator hoses. Replace as needed.
  • Check head lights, tires and turn signals
  • Check any hitch or towing equipment
  • Clean your cooking vent hood to avoid grease fires
  • Leave your itinerary with friends or relatives in case of an emergency

Avoid trees or power lines that could fall on your vehicle. The safest place during lightning is inside your RV. If you're on the path of a tornado you are safest in a tornado shelter. Avoid parking in low areas that are prone to flash flooding.

Before disaster strikes…

Make sure you take an inventory of your personal property because you'll need proof of ownership if you have to file a claim. Make sure the video records both the inside and outside of your RV. Store the information along with your insurance policy in a safety deposit box and send a copy to a relative out of the area.
